If your future goal is to become a certified medical assistant, there are certain steps that you have to go through in order to accomplish this ambition that you have set out for yourself. Below is a step by step list of things you have to go through in order to become a certified medical assistant.
Want to be a Certified Medical Assistant?
The first thing you have to do is of course to undergo the necessary training which will enable you to learn the skills that a certified medical assistant must have in order to work efficiently in your chosen career. The only prerequisites in going through this training are that you must have a high school diploma and you must be at least eighteen years old. If you have complied with both of these requirements, then, you are ready to go.
There are several ways by which you may undertake this training. This will of course depend on your schedule and availability. You may opt to study full time in which case you have the chance to finish your training in as little as six months. This is an ideal situation if you can afford to focus solely on your studies for the duration of the training. However, if you are also working while going through your studies, you have a choice between attending night school or studying during weekends. This will allow you to handle both your work and your studies at the same time. Another option you might want to explore is the possibility of distant learning or what is commonly termed as online studying. The advantage of this type of learning is that you can set your own pace depending on your available time. You can go as fast or as slow as you wish. Also, if you wish to study in the middle of the night or in the early dawn, there’s nothing to stop you from doing so. In addition, this has the advantage of being a cheaper alternative to the traditional method of learning. Bear in mind that you’ll be studying in the comfort of your own homes so you won’t have to incur extra expenses like board and lodging. Whichever type of training you choose to go through, the important thing to remember is that the school you pick out should be duly accredited. Otherwise, all your time and effort towards becoming a certified medical assistant will simply go to waste.
In going through the training to become a certified medical assistant, you will be taught all the basic skills needed in order to effectively perform your duties when you start working in a hospital or in medical clinics. Your functions will deal with both the administrative and the clinical duties. Your administrative function will cover the facilitation of schedules, being on-hand for the patients who are awaiting their turn for their consultation as well as taking charge of billing. The clinical functions on the other hand, require more interaction with the patients since it includes the taking of the vital signs as well as assisting the physician during the actual consultation.
This means that upon completing the training, you will already be qualified to start working as a medical assistant. However, there is a possibility that this will limit your career growth. Your only recourse is to qualify as a certified medical assistant.
Even though this is not a requirement towards getting hired, if there are a number of applicants vying for the same job, those with higher qualifications will naturally be given priority. This means that although getting certified is not a requirement, becoming a certified medical assistant will only work to your advantage. It will also go to show that you are quite determined to succeed and will be taken as a point in your favor.
If you wish to get certified, simply take the examination given by the American Association of Medical Assistants or the AAMA. Upon passing the examination given, you can be assured that seeking a job will not be a problem. Certified medical assistants are naturally given precedence when it comes to hiring. This is because in order to pass the examination, it is understood that you have the necessary knowledge in order to effectively perform your duties as an assistant of the physician. If you have already been hired, being given additional responsibilities (and possibly a raise) is not within the realm of possibilities.
Becoming a certified medical assistant is not the end of your goal as far as training is concerned. There are several skills training being offered which will help you learn additional skills. Depending on your line of interest, you have the option of choosing what skills you wish to develop. Just like in any other endeavor, continuous education is the key towards improvement and progress.
